John Giles Eccardt
John Giles Eccardt (actually Johannes Aegidius Eckardt ; * in Germany , † October 1779 in Chelsea , London ) was a German-British portrait painter.
Little is known about Eccardt, his work is documented from 1742. Presumably he came to England at a young age with Jean-Baptiste van Loo in 1739, was his assistant there until his departure in 1742 and then took over his clientele and the house in Covent Garden . Together with another former assistant who made the draperies , Eccardt painted portraits in the style of van Loos.
Eccardt is known for his work on behalf of his patron Horace Walpole , who had him paint himself and his friends for his country house Strawberry Hill between 1746 and 1754. One of them was Thomas Gray . Walpole dedicated the poem The Beauties from 1746 to Eccardt. In 1770 Eccardt auctioned his own collection.
Eccardt was married to the daughter of the London watchmaker Duhamel.
The politician Henry Fox .
The diplomat Sir Charles Hanbury Williams .
