John Heneage Jesse
John Heneage Jesse (* 1808 in London ; † July 7, 1874 ) was an English historian and writer.
Jesse (pron. Dschess') held a position in the Admiralty for many years. As early as 1829 he had published a poem about Maria Stuart and soon afterwards another verse in the volume: Tales of the dead (1830).
As a result, he turned to history and biography with anecdotal aftertaste. He wrote:
- Memoirs of the court of England during the reigns of the Stuarts (1839–40, 4 vols .; 3rd ed. 1857, 3 vols.);
- The court of London from the revolution in 1688 to the death of George II. (1843, 3 vols.);
- George Selwyn and his contemporaries (1843-44, 4 vols.);
- Literary and historical memorials of London (1847, 2 vol .; new series 1850, 2 vol.); Richard III and his contemporaries (1861);
- London, its celebrated characters and remarkable places (1870, 3 vols.);
- Memoirs of celebrated Etonians (1875, 2 vol.) Et al
The memoirs of the life and reign of Georg III are considered to be his most important work . (1867, 3 vol.).
