John Henry Dolph
John Henry Dolph (* 1835 in Fort Ann , New York ; † 1903 ) was an American painter who is best known in the art trade for his depictions of animals, especially cats.
Life
In 1855 Dolph studied portrait painting with Allen Smith in Cleveland. In 1863 he moved to New York City. Since he could not sell his works until then, he moved to Antwerp to Jean Louis van Kuyck to learn animal painting. He lived in Paris from 1868 to 1873. In 1898 Dolph was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design .
