John Hepworth
John Anthony Hepworth (born 1944 in Adelaide ) is an Anglican Australian bishop . From 2003 to 2012 he was Primate of the Traditional Anglican Communion , which is not in full church fellowship with the Anglican Communion . Since 1998 he has been Bishop of the Diocese of Australia in the Anglican Catholic Church in Australia , which is part of the Traditional Anglican Communion .
Life
In 1968 Hepworth was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Adelaide . In 1976 he joined the Anglican Church of Australia . From 1977 to 1978 he was chaplain of the Colac parish and from 1978 to 1980 rector of South Ballarat, based in Sebastopol near Ballarat . After he transferred to the Anglican Catholic Church in Australia in 1992 because he was against the introduction of women's ordination in the Anglican communion, he was consecrated bishop in 1996. In 1998 he finally became Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Australia and in 2002 succeeded Louis Falk as Archbishop as Primate of the Traditional Anglican Communion .
Hepworth graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1982 for a thesis on Catholic Action entitled "The Movement Revisited: A South Australian Perspective". He later did a PhD. For five years he was a lecturer in political science at Northern Territory University before becoming coordinator of international studies at the University of South Australia . In 1998 he was elected to the Australian Constitutional Convention as a member of the Australians for Constitutional Monarchy . He was a former chairman of the Australia-Vietnam Human Rights Committee in South Australia.
Hepworth advocates full Church Fellowship of Traditional Anglican Communion with the Roman Catholic Church and is instrumental in establishing the staff ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross in Australia.
Hepworth has been married twice with three children and lives in Adelaide's suburb of Blackwood, South Australia.
