John Hopkins (composer)

John Hopkins (* 1949 , in Polegate, East Sussex ) is a British composer .

Education

Hopkins graduated from University College Cardiff . His teachers include Alun Hoddinott and Arnold Whittall . He also took composition lessons from Peter Maxwell Davies . In 2000, Hopkins graduated from the University of Sussex with a D.Phil.

Career

Hopkins was elected regional composer-in-residence by the Eastern Arts Association (now rts Council England East) in 1979. After holding various chairs, he is currently (as of 2011) Co-ordinator of Practice-Based Studies at the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge , and Director of Studies for Music at Homerton College .

His For the Far Journey (1981) was commissioned by the Gemini Ensemble and premiered by the same ensemble. According to music journalist David Wright, this composition exemplifies elements characteristic of Hopkins' oeuvre, especially the 'delightful structures and the effective tempos in the execution of ideas'. White Winter, Black Spring is a work for 2 voices and a large instrumental ensemble; here Hopkins used poems by Robert Lowell .
