John Huehnergard

John Huehnergard (born before 1953 ) is an ancient orientalist and professor emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin , former professor at Harvard University and an honorary doctorate from the University of Chicago since 2014 .

Huehnergard studied religious studies at Wilfrid Laurier University until 1974 . After completing his BA there , he took up a doctoral degree in Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Harvard University, which he graduated with honors in 1979. In the following years he taught at Columbia University until 1983 , then until 1988 first as an associate professor at Harvard, before receiving a full professorship there. He gave up this position in 2009 to work in Austin (Texas) until his retirement in 2017 . A visiting professorship took him to Johns Hopkins University in 1985/86 .

Huehnergard is a member of the American Oriental Society , whose presidency he held in 2017/18, as well as the Linguistic Society of America and the International Association for Assyriology . His research focus is on the grammar of ancient oriental languages.
