John Joubert

John Pierre Herman Joubert (born March 20, 1927 in Cape Town ; † January 7, 2019 ) was a British composer of South African origin.

Career

Joubert had his first music lessons from his mother, who was herself a piano student of Harriet Cohen . His first compositions were written during his school days and he received private composition lessons from William Henry Bell , a student of Frederick Corder .

In 1946 he won the composition prize of the Performing Right Society and a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London . Here Theodore Holland , Howard Ferguson and Alan Bush were his teachers. From 1950 to 1962 he was a lecturer in music at the University of Hull .

Since 1962 he has taught at the University of Birmingham . In 1979 he received a visiting professorship at the University of Otago in New Zealand. The Durham University (1991) and the University of Birmingham (2007) awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 1986 Joubert retired from teaching in order to gain more time for composition.

In 2007 his birthday was celebrated with a "Joubertiade", during which the world premieres of his opera Jane Eyre and the oratorio Wings of Faith took place. In 2010 he was Composer in Residence of the Three Choirs Festival , for which he composed An English Requiem .

He composed operas and ballets, singonies and other orchestral works, instrumental concerts, church music and choral works, piano pieces and chamber music.
