John L. Tonry

John L. Tonry (* 1953 ) is an American astronomer and asteroid explorer.

He studied mathematics at Princeton University until 1975 and received his PhD in physics from Harvard University in 1980 . In 1986 he became a professor at MIT , and a year later he moved to the chair of astronomy at the University of Hawaii . There he discovered a total of two asteroids between 1993 and 1995 . In 1986 he became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ).

In 2016 an asteroid was named after him: (40919) Johntonry . In 2018 Tonry was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .
