John Mercer, Baron de Aldie

Baron John Mercer (* 1300 in Scotland ; † 1379 or 1380 ) was a wealthy noble trader, financier and politician. He founded an entire dynasty of Mercers.

Thomas Mercer is named as the father of John Mercer. John married Ada Murray, with whom he fathered six children, including another John Mercer. The Mercers resided in Aldie Castle for generations. John Mercer was a financier and supporter of King David II of Scotland. He became king at the age of 5 and had to be supported by loyal nobles like Mercer.

  • In 1328 Mercer became a citizen (Burgess) of Perth , the then capital of Scotland .
  • 1356 he became Provost (Provost) of Perth.
  • from 1364 he was a parliamentarian in Perth.

In addition, Mercer traveled a lot as an international dealer and ambassador for Scotland in France , Flanders and England . He was one of the richest Scottish traders. He owned ships of his own.
