John Mill (* around 1645 - 23 June 1707 ) was an English theologian .

Mill was born in Shap , Westmorland , around 1645 and attended Queen's College , Oxford . There he became a member in 1661 and acquired his master's degree in 1669. In the same year he performed the " Oratio Panegyrica " at the opening of the Sheldonian Theater . In 1676 he became chaplain to the Bishop of Oxford and in 1681 acquired the rectorate of Bletchington , Oxfordshire , where he was also promoted to chaplain to Charles II . He was director of St Edmund Hall from 1685 until his death . In 1704 he was nominated by Queen Anne for a prebendal stall in Canterbury Cathedral . He passed away two weeks after his Greek Testament was published.

In 1707 Mill brought his Novum testamentum græcum, cum lectionibus variantibus MSS. exemplarium, versionun, editionum SS. patrum et scriptorum ecclesiasticorum, et in easdem nolis (Oxford, fol. 1707), which he tackled with the great support of John Fell , his predecessor in the field of textual criticism of the New Testament . The completion took 30 years and was a big step forward compared to the previous teaching. The text of the edition corresponds to the Textus receptus of the Editio Regia by Robert Estienne from the year 1550, but it contains many remarks, including all pre-existing collections of different readings as well as a large number of additional readings that he himself had collected when examining other manuscripts. There were also oriental versions, but he only used them in the Latin translations.

In 1710 Ludolph Küster published a reprint of Mill's Testament in Amsterdam, which was expanded to include the readings of 12 other manuscripts (Dibdin). Further title editions followed in 1723 and 1746, with only the title page being changed.
