Johann (John) Motz , (born June 5, 1830 in Diedorf (Eichsfeld) ); † October 29, 1911 in Kitchener (Ontario) , Canada) was a German-born Canadian local politician and editor of the Berliner Journal .

John Motz, who came from a farming family in Eichsfeld , emigrated from Diedorf to Canada in 1848 and founded the publishing house "Rittinger & Motz" with Friedrich Rittinger in Berlin ( Ontario ) in 1859 . The company published and printed a number of newspapers, starting with the weekly Berliner Journal . It appeared from 1859 to 1899 and was considered the leading German-language newspaper in Canada. In 1899, John Motz retired from the publishing business for reasons of age and his son Moritz took over his position. In 1870 he was first elected to the Berlin Town Council and from 1880–1881 he was mayor of his community. In 1890 John Motz was appointed sheriff of Waterloo County, an office which he held until his death in 1911.
