The Rifugio Quinto Alpini (also Rifugio V ° Alpini , full name Rifugio Quinto Reggimento Alpini - Bertarelli ) is a refuge on the southern flank of Monte Zebrù in the Ortler Alps . It is located at 2877 m above the Val Zebrù and belongs to the municipality of Valfurva , which is in the Italian province of Sondrio in Lombardy . A little below is the Rifugio Bertarelli, used as a dependance and winter room.
history
The mountain hut was built in 1884 as Capanna Milano by the Milan section of the Club Alpino Italiano to make the central peaks of the main ridge of the Ortler Alps accessible from the south. It was expanded for the first time in 1901.
During the First World War , the section command of the Italian troops operating in Val Zebrù was housed in the hut and formed a cornerstone in the defense of the Italian Ortler front . In 1926 it was renamed in memory of the 5th Alpini Regiment deployed here during the war .
In 1928 the Rifugio V ° Alpini was completely rebuilt. A little below, the Rifugio Bertarelli emerged from a former war barracks, named after the alpinist Guido Bertarelli, who fought as an Alpini officer on the Ortler front in World War I and made a significant financial contribution to the reconstruction of the Rifugio Quinto Alpini after the war.
Access
The two huts can be reached in 4 hours from the west of San Nicolò Valfurva through the Val Zebrù. From the last parking lot there is also a shuttle service to Baita del Pastore. There is also a hut crossing to the Rifugio Pizzini-Frattola , which leads over the Northern Ortler Pass into Val Cedec.
