The Rifugio Cesare Branca (German Brancahütte ) is an alpine refuge in the Italian region of Lombardy in the Ortler Alps . It lies at an altitude of 2493  m slm and belongs to the CAI - Milan section . The hut is managed from mid / late June to mid September and during the ski touring season from early March to mid May. It has 102 beds and a winter room with 8 beds.

location

The hut is located in the upper Valle dei Forni, an eastern side valley of the Valfurva at the foot of the Forni glacier. A little below the Rifugio is the small Lago delle Rosole. The partly glaciated north face of Punta San Matteo rises to the south . In addition to Punta San Matteo, the Rifugio Branca is the starting point for climbing the Cevedale , Palòn de la Mare , Monte Vioz and Pizzo Tresero .

history

The construction of the hut began in 1932 on the initiative of Giuseppina Branca, who co-financed the construction in memory of her brother Cesare Branca, an enthusiastic alpinist. It was inaugurated in 1934 and given to the CAI Milan section. In 1978 the Martinelli dependance was built next to the Rifugio on the initiative of Luigi Martinelli in memory of his brother Genesio. In 1985 the rifugio was expanded and in 1995 both buildings were connected by an extension, so that today they represent a single structure.
