The District League Gera 1979/80 was the 28th season of the District League Gera of the German Football Association .

Master and advanced into the DDR-Liga was BSG Motor Hermsdorf . The big favorite did not take over the table lead until matchday 21 and fought a thrilling duel with the newcomer BSG Progress Pößneck until the end . Neustadt and Eisenberg also kept up until the half-series, but later had to be demolished.

The second league relegated BSG Chemie Schwarza fared much worse . Schwarza was passed into the district class after only one year. Even the highest result of the season, an 11: 0 against Elsterberg, was no longer enough in the end, because at the same time Seelingstädt secured the urgently needed point with a 9: 9 (!) Against Dynamo Gera.

After two years (1977/78 withdrawal, 1978/79 only compulsory friendship games), the BSG Wismut Gera II was reintegrated into normal gaming operations and managed to stay up.

Elsterberg and Aufbau Jena were beaten at times in the battle to remain in the league. Ultimately, Turbine Auma was the fourth team to be hit.

For the following season, the three season winners of the district class rose. With BSG Modedruck Gera (formerly TSG Gera-Zwötzen) and BSG Chemie Kahla , two old friends returned. With the BSG Empor Lobenstein there was an absolute newcomer.
