The 1. FC Gera 03 was a football club in the East Thuringian town of Gera .

Club history

The roots of 1. FC lie in the Gera district of Zwötzen , where the Wacker Zwötzen sports club was founded on May 25, 1919. It had to be dissolved after the Second World War, when all civil associations were banned on the initiative of the Soviet occupying power. In sport, loosely organized sports communities were allowed, which were initially only allowed to hold competitions at the district or city level. The Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft (TUS) Zwötzen was founded in Zwötzen. From 1949 onwards, sport was organized in so-called company sport associations (BSG) in East Germany , which were supported by local companies and institutions. The TUS thus had the opportunity to transform itself into the BSG Progress Zwötzen in 1950. The designation “progress” shows that the BSG was supported by the Geras textile industry. When other Gera companies took over the sponsorship in 1966, the sports club was renamed TSG Gera-Zwötzen. At the beginning of the 1970s, the large Gera company "Modedruck" took on the leading role at TSG, which on December 14, 1973, took on the name BSG Modedruck Gera.

After the political change in 1989 , the status of a company sports association could no longer be maintained due to the legal and economic changes. The BSG was therefore transferred to the civil association TSV 1880 Modedruck Gera-Zwötzen on January 1, 1991 . After the textile company completely stopped funding, the addition of "fashion printing" was dropped again in 1992. When the neighboring club 1. SV Gera had to go bankrupt in 2003, the football section of TSV decided to become independent "to make Gera football a brand in Thuringia again". On May 23, 2003, the 1. FC Gera 03 was founded with the soccer teams of TSV and SV 1861 Liebschwitz. On November 30, 2011, the board of directors of 1. FC Gera 03 filed an application with the Gera district court to open insolvency proceedings. Such an application had to be made as early as July 2010, but at that time it could be withdrawn in due time after a high proportion of outstanding liabilities had been settled. After the board of directors was unable to present a secure financial concept for the second half of the season at the end of January 2012, the players were given clearance and on January 31, 2012 the league team was canceled with immediate effect at the Northeast German Football Association . Today the association is dissolved.

The youth department was transferred to the youth football club (JFC) Gera, which was founded on July 1, 2012. A men's team is currently (as of 2014/15) not participating in the game. The former women's football department formed a syndicate with the BSG Wismut Gera from 2010 . From this syndicate, the FFC Gera emerged on April 29, 2011 .

Football development

After years in lower-class leagues in the GDR district of Gera , the first men's team of BSG Motor rose in 1961 for the first time in the then fourth-class district league Gera. After the remarkable eighth place among twelve teams for a newcomer, the even better seventh place in 1963 was no longer enough for relegation due to the reduction of the district league to one season. It took ten years until the team, which was now playing as TSG Gera Zwötzen, was able to qualify again for the district league, which had meanwhile become the third division in GDR football. The playing strength was only enough for three seasons. In 1980 the BSG Modedruck Gera undertook to establish itself in the district league, but after another three years the BSG had to finally retreat to the lowlands of the district football. Whether as progress, TSG or fashion printing, the Zwötzeners were always in the shadow of the uranium industry sponsored BSG Wismut Gera , which played in the league, the highest GDR soccer class, for several years.

At first nothing changed under the umbrella of the DFB . While Wismut Gera and later 1. SV Gera played in the Amateur Oberliga Nordost until 1996 and 1999/2000, then in the Thuringian League, TSV only managed to move up to the fifth-class Thuringian League in 2003. After that, the situation changed temporarily, because the 1. SV rose through bankruptcy to the district league. The path of the newly founded 1. FC Gera 03 led further upwards, because in 2007 they were promoted to the Oberliga Nordost . There they kept up well in the first season and only just missed promotion to the new three-track regional league.

DFB-Pokal, 1st main round 2006: 1. FC Gera 03 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern

A particular success in the club's history was the entry into the final of the TFV Cup 2006, which Gera lost 2: 4 to FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Since the Jenaers were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in the same year and were thus automatically qualified for the DFB Cup, 1. FC Gera 03 played despite the defeat in the 2006/07 DFB Cup . There the team met the first division relegated 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the first main round and lost this game 2-0.

In 2007 they moved into the Thuringian Cup final again and defeated FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt , who played two classes higher, 1-0. A few days later, the premature win of the national championship title and thus promotion to the league succeeded. With the cup victory, the team qualified for the second time in a row for the first main round of the DFB-Pokal , where they met second division club FC Carl Zeiss Jena at the beginning of the new season and lost 3-0.

The major league season 2009/10 was significantly worse than the previous one, mainly due to significant financial problems. From the 3rd matchday on, the team was in constant danger of relegation and was only able to place itself in 14th place in the end. Despite winning relegation games, hopes of relegation due to the withdrawals of Tennis Borussia Berlin (insolvency) and the 2nd team of FC Hansa Rostock were not fulfilled. With the clear relay victory in the following league season, the direct return to the league was achieved.

Stadion

The club's home ground was the Karl-Harnisch-Stadion in Gera-Zwötzen, where the previous club TSV 1880 Zwötzen played. From 2006 to summer 2010 the games of the first men's team (with a few exceptions) took place in the Stadium of Friendship . Since relegation from the Oberliga (summer 2010) to the Köstritzer Association League (also Thuringian League), the first men's team has played again in the Karl Harnisch Sports Center in Gera-Zwötzen.
