PG 1159-035 (also GW Virginis ) is a white dwarf ( pre-white dwarf ) at a distance of about 1400  light years . It is the prototype of the so-called PG1159 stars and, due to its pulsations, the prototype of the GW Virginis stars , a subgroup of the ZZ Ceti stars .

Stars like PG 1159-035 are at the transition of a star from a giant star to a white dwarf ( Post-AGB star ). In this phase the stars have an extreme surface temperature and therefore shine extremely brightly compared to the sun despite their small star radius .
