The monte cevedale (according to the Italian survey 3769  m slm , according to the German-Austrian surveying 3778  m above sea level. A. ) is to Ortles and Königsspitze the third highest mountain of Ortles Alps .

Location and surroundings

The Cevedale is part of the main ridge of the Ortler Alps. It rises between the head of the Val de la Mare in the east and the Valle Cedec in the west. The border between the Lombardy province of Sondrio and Trentino , of which it is the highest point, runs over its summit . The mountain and the surrounding area are part of the Stilfserjoch National Park .

The two random peaks in the northeast are connected to the Cevedale by an approximately 600 m long ridge : the rear Zufallspitze ( Cevedale II ) with a height of 3757  m slm and the somewhat lower Vordere Zufallspitze ( 3700  m slm ). The Hintere Zufallspitze marks the border triangle of the Italian provinces of Sondrio, Trentino and South Tyrol . A short ridge leading to the west connects the Cevedale with the Monte Pasquale ( 3553  m slm ); the next significant elevation in the main ridge, which continues southwards, is the Palòn de la Mare ( 3703  m slm ).

Alpinism

Monte Cevedale is the highest ski touring mountain in the Ortler Alps, because in good conditions it can be climbed on skis to the top. The ascents are moderately difficult, but all lead over glaciers and require caution and equipment to avoid crevasses . They are often combined with a visit to the random peaks.

The Casatihütte ( 3269  m slm ) is located north of the summit on the normal route on a glacier high plateau and is ideal for accommodation. When it is foggy it is difficult to find, sometimes only by means of its siren. It is from the north through a pass crossing from the Schaubachhütte ( 2581  m slm ) directly from the ski area of Sulden , from the northeast from the Martell valley past the Zufallhütte ( 2265  m slm ) over the Langenferner or the most difficult from the southwest of Santa Caterina at the Pizzinihütte ( 2700  m slm ) over reach.

As the alternative summit ascents from the Marteller Hütte ( 2580  m slm ) via the Fürkeleferner and the north-west ridge or from the Brancahütte ( 2487  m slm ) via the south ridge are only slightly more difficult than the normal route and can also be climbed on skis close to the summit , Monte Cevedale is ideal for worthwhile crossings.

Since the Italian - Austrian front line ran north of the Cevedale through the Ortler Alps during the First World War in the so-called mountain war of 1915–1918 , remnants of former military positions can still be seen on the summit ridge of Monte Cevedale , depending on the snow depth .
