Rifugio Casati and surroundings

The Rifugio Gianni Casati ( Rifugio Casati for short , also Rifugio Casati e Guasti , German Casatihütte ) is a mountain hut on the Langenferner Joch in the Ortler Alps . The hut in the Stelvio National Park is located in the Italian province of Sondrio ( Lombardy ) near the border with South Tyrol at an altitude of 3254  m . A few meters above the hut is the Rifugio Guasti at 3270  m slm (according to other sources 3269  m ) , which is only used as emergency and winter storage .

history

The construction of the hut began in 1922 on the initiative of the CAI Milan section. The location of the hut was chosen here in order to achieve an optimal connection between the Valfurva , Sulden and Martell valleys and to replace the huts in the area that were destroyed in the mountain war of 1915–1918 , in particular the Capanna Cedec and the Hallesche hut on the Eisseepass. Material from the Halleschen Hütte and a war building was used in the construction of the Casatihütte. After the construction was delayed by bad weather, the hut was inaugurated on December 9, 1923 and named after the Italian officer Gianni Casati, who died in Gorizia in 1916 during the First World War . His father had financially supported the construction of the hut. In the course of the popularization of skiing, lifts were built on the Zufallferner and a ski school was set up in the Casatihütte in 1932. At this time the Casatihütte became very popular and had to be expanded and modernized several times, so that it finally had more of a hotel than a hut character. The increase in visitor numbers at this time also resulted in the expansion of the additional building in 1934. In 1986 this hut was named after the Milanese CAI consultant Alessandro Guasti.

The Casatihütte was renovated in 1985, and since a modernization in 2003, running hot water has also been available at the hut.

Access

The hut can be reached from Santa Caterina Valfurva via the Rifugio Pizzini ( 2706  m ), from Sulden via the Schaubachhütte ( 2581  m ) and the Suldenferner or from Martell via the Langenferner . The hut is supplied by a material cable car, the valley station of which is near the Rifugio Pizzini.
