John Newman (architect)

John Newman , Esq. (* 1786 in London ; † January 3, 1859 in Passy ) was a British architect .

Newman was from June 10, 1830 to 1849 Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London . One of his main works is the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary Moorfields in London. He was among the founders of the Royal Institute of British Architects . He worked with Robert Smirke on two projects : the General Post Office and the second building of the Royal Opera House .

Newman married in 1817. The marriage had three children: a son, named Arthur Shean Newman (1828–1873), also an architect, and two daughters, one of them, Victoire Dawes (* 1826 in Southwark ), was married to Alexander Spiers . Newman, who had retired from them in 1850, died in Passy.
