John Prentice (comic artist)
John Franklin Prentice (born October 17, 1920 in Whitney , Texas , † May 23, 1999 in Connecticut ) was an American comic book artist and illustrator.
life and work
After growing up in Texas, Prentice served in the U.S. Navy for six years and participated in several naval battles during World War II . After retiring from the military, he attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and then worked in advertising. After the accidental death of Alex Raymond in September 1956, Prentice, supported by Fred Dickenson, took over his strip Rip Kirby and continued this until 1999.
Prentice received the National Cartoonist Society's (NCS) Story Newspaper Strip Award in 1966, 1967, and 1986 . He died in May 1999 of complications from cancer.
