John Reilly (politician)

John Reilly (born February 22, 1836 in Abnerville , Indiana County , Pennsylvania , †  April 19, 1904 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Reilly was first homeschooled and then attended public schools in his homeland. Then he worked in the railroad business. From 1854 he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad . From 1865 and 1875, he was Superintendent of Transportation and headed their transportation department. From 1871 to 1873 he was also President of the Bells Gap Railroad Co. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1872 and 1873 he was a member of the Altoona parish council .

In the congressional election of 1874 , Reilly was elected to the 17th  constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Robert Milton Speer on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Reilly worked again in the railroad industry. Between 1877 and 1885 he again headed the transportation division of the Pennsylvania Railroad . From 1881 he lived in Philadelphia, where he later worked in various other industries. He died there on April 19, 1904.
