John Ridgway

John Manfield Ridgway MBE (born July 8, 1938 ) is a British rower, sailor and author.

biography

Ridgway attended Pangbourne Nautical College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He served with the British Armed Forces Special Air Service (SAS). In 1966, as captain of the British Paratrooper Regiment, he rowed across the Atlantic with Chay Blyth in an open dory , the English Rose III. They took 92 days, making them the second team after George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen in 1896 to successfully complete this route. In 1967 Ridgway and Blyth were awarded the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service for this achievement, which at the time was considered impossible .

In 1964 he married Marie Christine Ridgway, the daughter of Air Marshal Sir John d'Albiac .

In 1968 he, like Blyth, took part in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race with his Sloop English Rose IV , an attempt to become the first single-handed sailor to circumnavigate the world non-stop, but had to abandon the race at Recife , Brazil .

In 1969 he founded the John Ridgway School of Adventure in Ardmore, Sutherland , Scotland , which is now run by his daughter Rebecca.

In 1977/78 he took part in the Whitbread Round the World Race with his yacht Debenhams .

In 1983/84 Ridgway and Andy Briggs sailed around the world non-stop with the school's ketch , the English Rose VI, in a record time of 203 days.

In 1987 he was awarded the Mungo Park Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society .

In 2003/04, Ridgway circled the world with the English Rose VI as part of a United Nations Environment Program campaign to protect albatrosses.
