John Russell, 27th Baron de Clifford

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Edward Southwell Russell, 27th Baron de Clifford ( June 8, 1928 - November 2, 2018 ) was a British nobleman and politician .

Origin and family environment

In the female line he came from the important Anglo-Norman family de Clifford, which included King Henry II's lover , Rosamund Clifford , as well as the Marshall of England Roger de Clifford , who was appointed to the royal council in 1299 by writ of summons , who thereby belonged when 1st Baron de Clifford became hereditary peer . The title remained in the Clifford family until 1605. Since the last baron from the Clifford family had no male heirs, the barony, passed on as barony by writ through the female line, passed through several other families in 1833 into the Russell family. In this way, the 27th Baron came from an old noble family, the Dukes of Bedford , in the male line .

Life

John Russell was born on June 8, 1928, the eldest son of Edward Russell, 26th Baron de Clifford (1907-1982) and Dorothee Meyrick. He was educated in Eton and then attended the Royal Agricultural College (RAC) in Cirencester . When his father died in 1982, he inherited not only his barony, but also his hereditary seat in the House of Lords . He lost this seat again when the House of Lords Act 1999 came into force , as he was not one of the 90 elected hereditary peers that could remain in the House of Lords.

The 27th Baron was married to Bridget Jennifer Robertson. Since the couple had no children, his nephew Miles Edward Southwell Russel (* 1966) inherited his title of nobility as the 28th baron.
