John Russell Brown
John Russell Brown (born September 15, 1923 in Bristol , † August 25, 2015 ) was a British Anglicist.
Life
After completing military service in the Royal Navy, he received MA (1949) and B.Litt. (1952) from the University of Oxford and received his doctorate in 1960 from the University of Birmingham . He founded the Department of Drama and Theater Arts at the University of Birmingham in 1963 and headed the Department until 1971, teaching and directing student productions. Subsequent university positions included a professorship in English at the University of Sussex (1971-1982), a professorship in theater arts at Stony Brook University (1982-1985) and a professorship in theater and drama at the University of Michigan (1985-1997).
