John Michael Edward Seymour, 19th Duke of Somerset DL FRICS (born December 30, 1952 in Bath ), from 1954 to 1984 called Lord Seymour , is a peer and large landowner in Wiltshire and Devon .

Lord Somerset is the son of Percy Seymour, 18th Duke of Somerset and Jane Thomas. He attended school at Hawtreys and Eton College and inherited the Dukedom in 1984 when his father died. He was a Member of the House of Lords from 1984 to 1999 and lost his seat under the House of Lords Act 1999 . From 2009 to 2014 he ran four times unsuccessfully in a by-election for a vacant seat among the hereditary nobility, until he was finally re-elected as a crossbencher in the House of Lords on December 10, 2014 . He succeeded David Lytton-Cobbold, 2nd Baron Cobbold , who resigned on October 13, 2014.

He became Deputy Lieutenant for Wiltshire in 1993 and Devon in 2003.

His residence is Bradley House in Maiden Bradley , Wiltshire .

family

He married Judith-Rose Hull, daughter of John Folliett Hull, on May 20, 1978 at All Saints' Church , Maiden Bradley , Wiltshire . The couple has four children:
