John Seymour Lucas (born December 21, 1849 in London - † May 8, 1923 ) was an English history and portrait painter , as well as a respected Victorian costume designer.

Life

He was born in London to an artistic family and originally trained as a wood carver. However, he quickly concentrated on portrait painting and first entered St. Martin's Lane Art School and later the Royal Academy . Here he met his future French wife and artist colleague, Marie Cornelissen , whom he married in 1877. John Seymour Lucas trained his artistry on extensive study trips through Europe, especially Holland and Spainwhere he studied Flemish and Spanish Masters. He began exhibiting in 1872, became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1876, and a full member of the Royal Academy in 1898.
