John Stewart, 1st Earl of Angus († December 9, 1331 ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

His father was Alexander Stewart of Bonkyl, who in turn was a grandson of Alexander, High Stewart of Scotland at the time of Alexander III. had been; his mother's name is unknown.

After his father's death around 1319 he took over his inheritance. He was named Earl of Angus by Robert "the Bruce" between October 24, 1328 and June 15, 1329. A papal dispensation dated the first date is issued for "Johanni Stwyarde domino de Bonkyl" ; on the second date he signed a deed of donation for lands in Blanerne with the title of Earl.

Little else is known about his life: in the course of 1331 he received a documented grant from your uncle Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray and Guardian of Scotland , to purchase land in Lammermuir. On November 24, 1331 he was knighted at the coronation of David II ; however, died two weeks later.

John was married once. Due to the bride's youth, the marriage was only concluded with Margaret, eldest daughter and co-heir of Alexander, Lord of Abernethy, after a papal dispensation had been granted (see above). His son Thomas , heir and later 2nd Earl, came from the marriage . With this marriage, considerable Perthshire land came into the possession of the Earl of Angus.
