Gladys Ludwina Anderson Emerson (born July 1, 1903 in Caldwell , Kansas , † January 18, 1984 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American biochemist and nutritionist .

Life

Gladys Ludwina Anderson was born on July 1, 1902 in Caldwell , Kansas and was the only child of Louise Williams and Otis Emerson. Her parents moved in their youth several times around, she went to Fort Worth , Texas in primary school and in El Reno , Oklahoma to the high school . She then studied at the Oklahoma College for Women and obtained both a bachelor's degree in English (BA) and chemistry (B.Sc.) in 1925 . She then went to Stanford University , where she received her master's degree in history in 1926 . After a few years teaching at a junior high school in Oklahoma City and at the Iowa State College , she studied biochemistry and animal feed (animal nutrition) at the University of California, Berkeley , where they 1932 under Herbert M. Evans doctorate . As a post-doctoral student , she and her husband Oliver H. Emerson were in Germany until 1933 with Adolf Windaus and Adolf Butenandt at the University of Göttingen .

On her return Gladys Anderson Emerson worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Experimental Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and was involved with her husband here in 1935 on the first isolation of α-tocopherol (vitamin E) from wheat oil. From 1942 she worked for Merck & Co., Inc. , where she became head of the department for animal nutrition at the Merck Institute for Therapeutic Research in Rahway , New Jersey . She stayed here until 1957 and researched B vitamins , among other things . During the Second World War she also worked for the Office of Scientific Research and Development . In 1957 she moved to the University of California, Los Angeles , where she became professor of nutritional science and head of the Department of Nutrition and Home Economics . She worked here until her retirement in 1970.

The marriage with her husband Oliver H. Emerson was divorced in 1940. In 1952 she was honored by the American Chemical Society with the Garvan Olin Medal for her achievements . Gladys Anderson Emerson died on January 18, 1984 in Santa Monica , California and was buried next to her parents in El Reno, Oklahoma.
