John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl († 1603)
John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl (* around 1566; † 1603 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .
Life
He was the eldest son of James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath from his marriage to Helen Ogilvy, daughter of James Ogilvy, 4th Lord Ogilvy of Airlie .
Already involved in 1579 he took over the administration of the lands of his father, on his death in 1585 he inherited his title as 6th Lord Innermeath .
After the son of his fifth-degree uncle John Stewart, 5th Earl of Atholl, whose Earl title had expired, he obtained the fact that he was given the title of Earl of Atholl on May 6, 1596 and married his widow shortly afterwards.
In November 1597, he and his wife, the Captain of Blair Castle and a group of armed men raided the estate of Walter Leslie of Morcleuch, set it on fire and took Leslie prisoner. This later complained to the Privy Council .
He died between August 26th and October 8th, 1603.
Marriages and offspring
His first marriage was on October 27, 1582, Lady Margaret Lindsay, daughter of David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford . From this marriage he left at least two children:
- James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl (1583-1625)
- Lady Margaret Stewart, ⚭ (1) Sir James Stewart of Ballechin, ⚭ (2) Sir Robert Crichton of Cluny
In his second marriage on March 31, 1596, he married Lady Mary Ruthven, widow of John Stewart, 5th Earl of Atholl, daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie . The marriage remained childless.
