Earl of Atholl (also Earl of Athole ) is a hereditary British title of nobility that has been awarded several times in the Peerage of Scotland . Since 1703 the Earldom has been a subordinate title of the Duke of Atholl .

When the Celtic line of the Earls of Atholl died out in the 13th century , it passed to the Strathbogie dynasty and changed several times in the following centuries, until in 1457 it was handed over to the half-brother of King Jacob II , John Stewart , as the progenitor of today's House of Atholl was awarded. After the death of the 5th Earl of the Stewart line, the title of Earl of Atholl passed to the son of the heiress, John Murray, Master of Tullibardine. During the Civil War , John Murray sided with Charles I. Blair Castle was captured by Cromwell in 1652 .

Title heir ( Heir apparent ) is the eldest son of the current title holder Michael Murray, Marquess of Tullibardine (* 1985).
