John, Earl of Buchan

John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Buchan (* around 1381; † August 17, 1424 at the Battle of Verneuil ), was a Scottish nobleman .

He was the son of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany and his second wife Muriella Keith.

At the death of his uncle Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan , called "Wolf of Badenoch", his title of Earl of Buchan fell to John's father in 1394 , who in 1406 prematurely transferred this title to John as 3rd Earl.

He married Elizabeth Douglas († around 1451), daughter of Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas , called "The Tyneman". Their only child, Margaret Stewart (* before 1425, † before 1461), married George Seton.

Buchan fought on the French side in the Hundred Years War . He was victorious in the Battle of Baugé (1421), and was captured in the Battle of Cravant (1423) and then exchanged. In 1421 he was appointed Constable of France . He fell at the Battle of Verneuil in 1424.

Buchan was the first in command of the Garde du Corps , the royal bodyguard made up of Scottish archers during the Hundred Years War.

Since he had no sons, his title of nobility fell to his cousin King James I on his death in 1424 and was extinguished by merging with the crown.
