John Stewart Bell Prize

The John Stewart Bell Prize has been awarded every two years by the University of Toronto (Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Control, CQIQC) since 2009 for achievements in the fundamentals of quantum mechanics , both in basic research and in applications, for example in quantum information theory ( Quantum computers , quantum cryptography , quantum control ). The research honored with the award should come from the past six years. The reward is less for lifetime achievement than significant recent contributions to research in this area, which has been changing rapidly since the 1990s.

The award is named after the quantum physicist John Stewart Bell , the originator of the Bell inequalities .

  • 2015 Rainer Blatt , for pioneering research on quantum information processes with ions in ion traps, especially for his recent demonstrations of analog and digital quantum simulators and quantum logic gates on a topologically coded qubit .
  • 2017 Ronald Hanson , Sae Woo Nam , Anton Zeilinger for the experiments of their groups, which at the same time closed the loopholes in terms of detection and locality in a violation of Bell's inequality .
