John Talbot (politician)

John Talbot (* around 1717, † 1778 ) was a British politician.

Life

John Talbot was the eldest son of the gentry belonging to John Ivory Talbot and Mary Mansel, a daughter of Thomas Mansel, 1st Baron Mansel . He attended Westminster School from 1726 and studied at Oriel College in Oxford from 1735 . In 1747 he was elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament from Marlborough , but in 1754 he declined to run again. In 1763 he served as the sheriff of Wiltshire .

He married Elizabeth Stone, daughter of James Stone, of Bradbury Manor , Wiltshire , on December 19, 1742 . He inherited Lacock Abbey after his father's death in 1772 . Since he died without any legitimate children, Lacock Abbey fell to his sister Martha, who was married to William Davenport , after his death . Their son, William, took the name Davenport Talbot .
