John W. Shy
John W. Shy (* 1931 ) is an American military historian . He is a professor at the University of Michigan and mainly dealt with the American Revolutionary War and is considered an authority on its military history in the USA.
Shy holds a master's degree from the University of Vermont and a PhD from Princeton University . He then taught at Princeton before becoming a professor at the University of Michigan in 1968 and, upon arriving at the university, founded a military history study group. In 1974 he gave the Harmon Memorial Lecture in Military History at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. In 1974/75 he was visiting professor ( Harold Keith Johnson Chair of Military History ) of the Military History Research Collection at the US Army War College Library.
In 2010 he received the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize .
