John Walker Maury
John Walker Maury (born May 15, 1809 in Caroline County , Virginia , † February 2, 1855 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1852 and 1854 he was Mayor of Washington City.
Career
John Maury came from a family known in Virginia. From 1826 he lived in Washington, where he practiced as a lawyer after studying law. Later he also got into banking. From 1846 he was President of the National Bank of the Metropolis .
Politically, Maury joined the Democratic Party and was a member of Washington City Council. In 1852 he was elected mayor of the federal capital against incumbent Walter Lenox of the Whig Party . He held this office between June 14, 1852 and June 12, 1854. It is worth noting that until 1871 the mayor of Washington did not administer the entire District of Columbia . The then independent city of Georgetown provided its own mayor until 1871.
During Maury's tenure as mayor, St. Elizabeth's Hospital was established in 1852 . In addition, the city's water supply system was modernized. In 1954, John Maury lost to John T. Towers of the Know-Nothing Party when attempting re-election . He died a few months after the end of his term on February 2, 1855 in Washington and was buried in the local convention cemetery.
