John Webb (* 1611 ; † October 24, 1672 in Butleigh ) was an English architect of Palladianism .

Webb was a student and son-in-law of Inigo Jones . At the beginning of his career he worked as a draftsman for Jones on the designs of the Banqueting House and other buildings. After Jones 'death in 1652, Webb inherited Palladio's collection of drawings as well as Jones' own and was considered the leading classical architect of the 1650s in England. His best-known works include the interiors of Wilton House and the north wing of The Vyne mansion near Basingstoke , for which he designed a gabled portico in 1654 , which is considered the first in England. His main work is the design for the new building of the Royal Palace of Placentia in Greenwich , which began in 1664. However, only the west wing was built until 1669, before further construction was stopped due to lack of money. The palace was later rebuilt as the Royal Naval Hospital , following modified designs by Wren .

After a successful career, Webb died in 1672. His buildings and works had a great influence on the further development of neo-Palladian architecture in England in the 18th century. However, many of his buildings were later changed or destroyed, so that Webb was forgotten and his teacher Jones is now considered the most famous Palladian architect in England.
