John Wooden Center

The John Wooden Center is a sports recreation center run by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). John Wooden was the most famous basketball coach to have worked at UCLA. As a token of recognition, the university has therefore given the center its name.

The John Wooden Center serves as a sports and recreation center for students, professors and staff. The UCLA gymnastics and volleyball teams also train in the building. The Wooden Center opened in 1983 and was the training venue for the athletes of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. An Olympic plaque can still be seen in the lobby as a reminder of the Games. The John Wooden Center received four extensions. Today it is 159,000 square feet, about 25,000 more than in 1983. Today, over 60,000 people use the center every day. Dance teams, sports teams, martial artists, dance classes, and sports classes meet at the John Wooden Center. Special classes can also be attended, for example in belly dancing and kendo . The vast majority of the centre's employees are UCLA students.

The Wooden Center is located in the center of the campus, on the corner of "Bruin Plaza." It is near the Arthur Ashe Center, the health center named after the tennis player Arthur Ashe . A dedicated soccer field is located behind the Wooden Center. In front of the Wooden Center there is also the bear sculpture, a landmark of UCLA. During the renovation work on the Pauley Pavilion, the UCLA teams played in the Collins Court of the Wooden Center.

To use it you have to be a university student or have a center membership with a "Bruincard".
