Creation and publication

The song, a rock ballad , was written by Rob Hyman, Rick Chertoff and Eric Bazilian and produced by Chertoff. The lyrics, which are written in the you form, are about a man who ostensibly falls in love with a woman, but who breaks inside through unrequited love; in some lines of text their kiss is compared to poison that is “forever in your body”, which means that the lyrics can also refer to alcohol or drug abuse. Rob Hyman said:

“This is a true story from someone we know. He kind of destroyed himself. The title is a warning: So far and no further! In the USA he was not so successful, in Germany Johnny B became an anthem. To this day we love playing this title. He's a great part of our show. "
