The Johnson Island is a 14 kmm long, 8 km wide and icy island within the Abbot Ice Shelf off the Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . It is located 22 km southeast of Dustin Island .
It was discovered as an ice dome by the crew of the icebreaker USS Glacier in February and the position was roughly recorded. The United States Geological Survey carried out a new mapping process in 1966 using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the island in 1968 after Theodore L. Johnson, an electrical engineer at Byrd Station from 1964 to 1965.
