Jon Mathieu (* 1952 in Bern ) is a Swiss historian .

Jon Mathieu is emeritus professor for history with a focus on modern times at the University of Lucerne and is particularly known as a mountain researcher and historian of the Alps .

Mathieu comes from a Romansh family and grew up in Bern. He studied history, ethnology and psychology in Bern. In his extensive licentiate thesis and dissertation, he dealt with the Lower Engadine 1650-1800. The central source was the handwriting Chiantun Verd by Martin Peider Schmid from Ftan . Mathieu received his PhD in 1984 and his habilitation in 1991.

Mathieu was the founding director of the “Istituto di Storia delle Alpi” at the Università della Svizzera italiana , and held various visiting professorships and teaching positions, including from 2007 to 2012 at the ETH Zurich . His research focus is the history of the mountains. In 2011 he published a global history of the mountains in modern times. In 2015 his overview of the history of the Alps was published by Reclam-Verlag.

Mathieu's second research focus is the history of family and kinship. In addition, he published on theoretical questions in historical research. Since his retirement in 2018, he has been involved in short and long-term projects in these priority areas.

From 2010 to 2016 Mathieu was a member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation .

He is married and has two grown children.
