Jonathan is a variety of apple whose origin is a seedling of the Esopus Spitzenberg variety found on Philip Rick's farm, New York. This variety was first described in 1826.
description
The Jonathan variety grows weak to medium-strong and forms a rounded crown with thin shoots. The tree needs a warm location and nutrient-rich, rather dry soil. As a diploid variety, Jonathan is considered a good pollen donor. The yield is regular and high. It is susceptible to apple scab , powdery mildew and fire blight .
The fruit is medium-sized and dark red with a green-yellow base color. The taste is fine, sweet and sour, aromatic, the light yellow flesh is firm and juicy. The harvest time is at the end of September, the consumption period runs from November to the beginning of April. The shelf life is good both under conventional conditions and in CA storage . However, the fruits are often blotchy.
