Manfred Fischer (* 1938 ) is a German pomologist and plant breeder.

life and work

In the so-called "Institute for Fruit Growing Dresden-Pillnitz" since 1966 and in 1972 in the "Institute for Fruit Research of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR", Fischer succeeded the late Heinz Murawski (1921–1978) as head of the fruit growing department. In the early 1970s he had already started to select the “ Supporter 4 ” rootstock used today , based on the “Pi 80” variety bred by Otto Schindler (1876–1936) . In the years that followed, his work focused mainly on the breeding of resistant fruit varieties for organic fruit growing with little use of fungicides in what was then the GDR . He continued Murawski's work on breeding plums , which led to the breeding of two shark-cat-tolerant varieties. The breeding of resistant sweet cherries continued with his participation in the institute.

Fischer had a doctorate and a habilitation.

In the last ten years of his professional life, he was responsible for the "Genebank Obst Dresden-Pillnitz" together with another research assistant. Mainly all available types of fruit were collected there and attempts were made to find varieties resistant to typical fruit diseases. On December 31, 2002, the project was ended and continued with other structures and Fischer retired. Since then he has published several monographs on fruit growing.

Breeds

Fischer was involved in the breeding of the apple varieties Pilot ( plant variety protection since 1988), Pinova (1996), Piros (1995), Reanda (1994), Relinda (1994), Remo (1990), Resi (1994), Retina (1994) and Rewena (1994). The pear varieties David (1995), Hortensia (1998), Isolda (without plant variety protection) and “Uta” (2000) were also bred with his participation. With his help, Graf Brühl (without plant variety protection) and “Countess Cosel” (without plant variety protection) were bred on plum varieties. He created the documents Supporter 1–3, which have quite similar properties, and the selection Supporter 4 .
