Jonathan Bragdon (* 1944 in Wilmington , Delaware , USA ) is an American painter . He has lived in the Netherlands since 1979 . His works are represented in various collections (e.g. Stedelijk Museum , Dutch PTT).

life and work

Bragdon studied in Strasbourg and Lausanne , among others . After working as an art teacher in Belmont , he made his bachelor's degree in "Philosophy of Art and studio art" at the University of Massachusetts in 1975 .

His works embody a balance that is also expressed through their simultaneity of objectivity and abstraction . This essential characteristic of Jonathan Bragdon's art becomes clear both on the production and on the reception level. "While the drawings appear in one moment as a detailed reproduction of every leaf, stalk and stone, in the next they dissolve into an abstract network of lines," explains Dr. Dorothée Brill (Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin) this phenomenon. No fixed location is assigned to the viewer. Rather, he is involved in a lively and exciting dialogue with the plant. With their wide range of drawing materials, such as graphite , watercolors , watercolor or ink , the drawings are above all fascinating works with an almost meditative, strongly emotional effect.
