Jonathan Richardson
Jonathan Richardson the Elder (* 1665 in London , † May 28, 1745 in Bloomsbury ) was a British portrait painter , art theorist and art collector .
Life
Richardson grew up with his stepfather. It was not until he was 20 years old that he studied painting with John Riley and developed a talent in portrait painting that he soon matched Godfrey Kneller and Michael Dahl in perfection. It was Joshua Reynolds that let Richardson fall into oblivion.
One of his students was Thomas Hudson , later the "British establishment painter", who was also portrayed by Richardson and who eventually married one of his daughters.
Not only was Richardson an early art collector, his gradually disintegrated collection of drawings was one of the largest in size in history.
His son was the painter and printer Jonathan Richardson the Younger (1694–1771).
