Jonathan Andrew Rutherford (born July 13, 1956 ) is a British cultural scientist.

Rutherford was Professor of Cultural Studies at Middlesex University, and from 2004 to 2012 editor of Soundings, an academic political journal from the New Left . He is associated with Blue Labor , a political movement within the British Labor Party .

Academic work

His academic oeuvre includes work in the field of gender studies with a focus on masculinity research , work on identity research and contemporary diagnoses of the 2007 financial crisis , the crisis of neoliberalism and the British economy in general. He also intervened in the debate about the future of social democracy and the political left in the western world . He represented communitarian positions, especially the concept of the "good society". From 2004 to 2012, Rutherford was the editor of Soundings, an academic political journal related to the New Left.

Blue Labor

Jonathan Rutherford was one of the speakers at the Political Discussion Seminars on the Future of the Labor Party that took place in Oxford and London in 2010 and 2011 . The resulting e-book "The Labor Tradition and the politics of paradox" was viewed in the British media as a central document of the Blue Labor current within the party. Jonathan Rutherford was one of the editors of the book alongside Maurice Glasman , Marc Stears and Stuart White and contributed to one of the leading essays. In addition, the publication took place in cooperation with the magazine Soundings, which Rutherford was publishing at the time.

As a result of the controversy that arose in July 2011 over the migration policy statements of the Blue Labor founder Maurice Glasman , Rutherford spoke of the separation of the group that had gathered around the Blue Labor idea and declared, despite the contrary Statements by Glasman, the end of the project. He pointed out that the joint e-book should serve to start a debate and should not be viewed as a "Blue Labor Bible". Nonetheless, Rutherford continued not only to address issues related to Blue Labor, but also to make positive references to the ongoing current.

More recently, Rutherford has become more committed to Blue Labor. He wrote an article on the LabourList blog that emphasized the relevance of the ideas of the current for the Labor Party led by Jeremy Corbyn . Since 2018 he has also been writing articles on the Blue Labor website.
