Jonathan "Jonny" Sexton (born July 11, 1985 in Dublin ) is an Irish rugby union player who is used in the position of the connector . He is active for the Irish national team and the Irish Pro14 team Leinster Rugby .
Sexton began his professional career in 2005 at Leinster. His international breakthrough followed in 2009. First, he led the province of Leinster to win the Heineken Cup after the previously seeded Argentine Felipe Contepomi was injured. In the semifinals he scored many points for victory over rival Munster , in the final he scored a drop goal to win the title against the Leicester Tigers . During the year he won the Churchill Cup with Ireland's reserve national team . At the November international he was nominated for the men's national team for the first time and made his debut in the 46:10 win over Fiji . After this victory, he was named player of the game and also used in the clash with South Africa , which Ireland won.
Sexton was the 2018 World Rugby Player of the Year winner , previously nominated for the award in 2014. He is only the second Irish player in history to win the 2001 award after the first winner, Keith Wood .
