Joop Wijn

Joop Wijn (born May 20, 1969 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch politician . Wijn was Minister of Economic Affairs in the Balkenende III cabinet . He is a member of the Christian Democratic Appèl (CDA).

Life

After finishing school, Wijn studied economics and law at the University of Amsterdam . During his studies he started to work for the company Royal Dutch Shell in Jakarta , Indonesia . He also worked as a teacher for economics during his studies and started his own agency. In 1994, Wijn obtained a master’s degree in both courses at the university . He got a job at the ABN Amro bank as an investment manager.

In 1998 he became a member of the Dutch Parliament, the Second Chamber of the States General . Wjn worked as a member of parliament in the areas of public finance, small business and immigration policy. Wijn were among the few MPs within his Christian Democratisch Appèl party who supported the approval of same-sex marriage . The debate over this caused tension between his private life and his political preferences, as Wijn is openly gay.

In July 2002 Wijn became State Secretary in the Balkenende I cabinet in the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and was given responsibility for foreign trade. In Balkenende II Wijn Secretary of the Treasury was. In the Third Balkenende cabinet was Wijn economy minister. In the Balkenende IV Wijn was no longer represented in the government. Wijn's successor as Minister of Economics in 2007 was the politician Maria van der Hoeven , a member of the Christians Democratisch Appèl , who had previously been Minister of Education in the Balkenende II cabinet .
