Jorge Manuel Theotokopoulos

Jorge Manuel Theotokopoulos (* 1578 in Toledo ; † 1631 , ibid) was a Spanish painter and architect. He was the only son of the painter Domenikos Theotocópoulos, called El Greco ("the Greek"); his mother was Jerónima de las Cuevas, whom El Greco served as a model after his arrival in Toledo (1577). It is not known whether the marriage was concluded between the two.

biography

The marriage of Jorge Manuel Theotokopoulos to Alfonsa de los Morales and the collaboration on the pictures of the Marian cycle in the Hospital de la Caridad de Illescas in Toledo are documented for the year 1603 . But already in the years 1607–1609 he created an independent altarpiece in Titulcia with the depiction of the Ascension of the unclothed St. Maria Magdalena , who on the one hand follows the painting tradition of his father, but on the other hand also reveals its own shortcomings. Just before his father's death, d. H. in the years around 1612/14, he turned to architecture, because he built the town hall ( Casa consistorial ) of Toledo as a collaborator of Nicolás de Vergara el Mozo and Juan Bautista Monegro . In 1621 he married a second time. Four years later he can be found working as a master builder at the Cathedral of Toledo . After that there are no more messages received; he died impoverished in Toledo after a legal battle with the Hospital de Tavera , which confiscated all of his property.
