Jorge Suarez Carbajal

Jorge Suarez Carbajal (born March 13, 1986 in Oviedo ) is an Asturian bagpiper . He was the 2004 Champion of Asturias and represented the Principality for four consecutive years in the MacCrimmon Trophy (formerly Macallan Trophy) at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient . In 2011 he received the AMAS award for the best bagpiper, given by the Anuario de la Música de Asturias (Yearbook for Music in Asturias).

Career

He started playing the bagpipes with Eugenio Otero in the schools of Suares (Asturias) in 1994. In 1997 he became a member of the Banda Gaites Noreña . With this band he toured Asturias and Spain and also played in Portugal. In 2000, at the age of 14, he won first prize at the regional finals of the children's competition "Veo-Veo" presented by Teresa Rabal, together with a group of rhythmic gymnastics from Gijón .

From March 2000 to 2003 he received lessons from Xuacu Amieva. With his brother Carlos he plays with several regional dance groups from Asturias, such as the Asociación Foklórica "Onís" . In 2003 he reached third place in the Macallan Trophy de Gaita at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient. On June 18, 2004, he won the final of the Memorial Draw Ovalle in Oviedo. In 2006 he had reached second place in the MacCrimmon Trophy at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient and was only surpassed by the Asturian Piper Ruben Alba. In addition to playing the bagpipes, he is currently studying engineering surveying at the University of Oviedo .
