Martin Robert Ernst Hermann Tegtmeyer (born September 21, 1906 in Gütersloh ; † August 8, 1983 ibid) was a German professor of small animal breeding.

Life and work

Martin Tegtmeyer was born as the son of the high school and singing teacher Wilhelm Tegtmeyer. He attended the humanistic grammar school in his hometown, which he left in 1926 with the final examination. In the following four years he initially worked as an agricultural apprentice and, after passing his exams, as an administrator on estates in Westphalia, the Rhineland and Thuringia. In the 1930 summer semester he moved to Göttingen University to study agriculture. Here he became a member of the Hannovera Burschenschaft , a student union, at that time in the German Burschenschaft (DB). In 1932 he moved to the University of Halle-Wittenberg and in 1934 took the examination for graduate farmers. From 1935 on he was a research assistant at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Dairy Science at the University of Halle. There he mainly devoted himself to both a strategy and a methodology for the wool performance test of Angora rabbits , which were sent to Halle for performance testing by members of the herdbook association that was formed. In 1936 he passed the examination for animal breeding officials in Prussia at the Reich and Prussian Ministry of Food and Agriculture. In 1942 the Reich Association of German Small Animal Breeders eV appointed him to the advisory board of the Reichsfachgruppe Rabbit Breeders eV His professional activity was interrupted in 1942 when he was called up for military service. After returning from American captivity, Tegtmeyer continued to work at the animal breeding institute in Halle. In 1950 he received his doctorate as Dr. agr. With effect from June 1, 1952, he was appointed director of the Institute for Small Animal Breeding at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Halle. In 1952 he completed his habilitation and was appointed lecturer in January 1953, and in December 1953 professor with full teaching position at the agricultural faculty of the University of Halle for the subject of small animal breeding. In 1958 the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Berlin appointed him to work in the Animal Breeding and Nutrition Section.

Martin Tegtmeyer was married to the technical teacher Margarete geb. Sewerin and had with her the sons Henning (1940–2019) and Eike (1943–1987). At the end of May 1958 the family fled to the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1959 he was accepted into the Faculty of Agriculture at Kiel University. In 1962 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor (later the title was "Professor at a scientific university"). In addition, he was appointed director of the scientific management of the teaching and research institute for small animal breeding of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture in Kiel-Steenbek.

From the more than 70 publications in agricultural journals during his professional activity in Halle and Kiel, it follows that Martin Tegtmeyer not only researched the improvement of animal products in wool and meat rabbits, poultry and goats through new breeding conditions, but also researched a species-appropriate one The attitude of the animals.

He retired in his birthplace, where he worked in the homeland club. This made him an honorary member in 1981.
